So, I seem to be stuck with a csv file I can open in a text editor but can't get any currently available SMS programs to read or restore. Unfortunately, I was unaware Snap Pea was discontinued, had disappeared from Google Play Store and the authors website gone. The irritating thing is I was trying to be careful, actively backing everything up before getting the new phone. csv to the storage directory for SMS B&R but, as you say, it won't read it and asks for a "valid" csv file-which presumably is one created by that program. And the restore function in the Snap Pea program continually fails. So, I seem to be limited to the backup made before that happened. Well, I could but the screen is completely shattered and somehow usb debugging got disabled and now i cannot see anything on the old phone and the backup program won't work without it. If it helps, SMS Backup and Restore lets you set the folder it looks in for backups via the app's preferences ("Backup folder" option). If you can't do that, and are relying on being able to read the csv you've made previously, then I really think that the only safe bet is to use the app that created it.

As stated, I am assuming that you can install and run these on the old phone and then use the same app on the new phone to restore. I don't think you've tried both of the programs I've mentioned, because one of them backs up to a GMail account and not to the phone at all, so definitely won't be looking at a specific place on the phone storage for the backup. But being a csv isn't enough to specify the format: it's the backup app that will choose the order of the comma separated variables and how the message data are stored, so the only app you can be sure can correctly read a csv backup and re-populate the message database is the same app that created the csv file in the first place. Most message backup apps use some form of XML, or else something proprietary. So my first thought, if you still have the old phone and can run another backup (which "I can do the standard message back up" suggests you can) would be to try an third party backup app such as SMS Backup and Restore or SMS Backup+ and see if that will let you transfer the messages, rather than the backup app you have used (of the 2 I'd try the first, since it will be quicker for a backup/restore of that size - SMS Backup+ is great for the real-time automatic backup, but the restore is slow when there are a lot of messages). If an SMS backup is working correctly it shouldn't matter what message app you use though.

I don't know what the "standard message backup" is (it's not an Android standard, but might be a Motorola or Verizon app). There are plenty of message apps you can try (I'm currently using Chomp, also like Textra, Evolve was quite nice last time I used it, etc.), and you can generally just try them for free and see. Obvious question: can the stock message app see the messages? If it can then the problem is Go SMS (which I agree is not the app it was - I stopped using it several years ago in fact).
